The Increase Of Islamophobia And The Mass Media - 1839 Words
The increase of islamophobia can cause social problems for students and a big factor that contributes to the spread of it is the mass media. Negative images of Islam are shown on the media almost everyday helping to create fear of Muslims. When students turn on the TV, they see images of horrific scenes of bombings and terrorist attacks. They hear arabic words over images like planes flying into the twin towers. Dedria Bryfonski, author of Islamophobia points out that ââ¬Å"instead of isolating political, economic, and military reasons for actions, the mass media portrays all events involving Muslims as religiously motivated behaviorâ⬠(26). They watch people like President Trump singling out muslims or immigrants and blaming not individuals forâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This is due to the fact that he was simply a Muslim student and a name like Ahmed Mohammed sends out a big potential terrorist alert. Another Texas teacher wanted to teach students to hate Muslims by giving out an unapproved homework assignment that contained false claims about Muslims wanting to kill them.In Florida a teacher called a Muslim student in front of classmates a ââ¬Å"raghead Talibanâ⬠for three days in a row. A Georgia teacher jokingly asked a Muslim student in front of the class if she had a bomb in her backpack. Incidents like these donââ¬â¢t just happen to the students but it also happens to their family members and their Muslim communities which can have just as much impact on them. They hear people telling them to go back their countries. They see their dads getting dirty looks on the streets and their moms getting harassed for wearing a Hijab outside. Just two days ago in Portland, Oregon, two people were killed and one was stabbed because they tried to defend two Muslim women, one of whom was wearing a hijab, that wear being verbally harassed by Jeremy Joseph Christian. Court records show that Christian was convicted of robbery, kidnapping and a weapons charge in 2002 but police are saying he is suffering from mental illness.
